The price of a typical Irish Guinness beer is going up. British drinks group Diageo will raise the price of a pint of Guinness in Ireland by 12p from next month due to inflation.
Irish pubs are asking Diageo to reverse the decision. They are already struggling with inflation. The Irish Pub Owners Association say pubs are being hit on all sides by the high cost of energy. The increase in the price of Guinness, the Irish favorite brand of beer, would be a further problem for pubs.
The British drinks group says it can no longer afford the high production costs. Other brewers, including Heineken and Carlsberg, are also raising their beer prices due to higher costs.
Those higher prices will have to be passed on to customers who are also struggling with high inflation. Pubs are therefore not happy with the increase in the price of Guinness beer, which also comes at a bad time. The coming months are the quietest of the year for pubs, says the industry association.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told reporters the higher price of Guinness could exacerbate financial woes for many people.
Guinness has been brewed in the Irish capital, Dublin, since 1759.
