The energy bill will increase considerably from January. The current price ceiling will then cease to exist and taxes on gas consumption will increase. Who will notice this most in their wallets?
People who live in a cold and draughty rental house and have taken out a variable energy contract will especially notice this. For example, for Essent customers, the gas price for variable contracts will increase from 1.3271 euros to 1.4494 euros per cubic meter. At Vattenfall, the price of a cubic meter of gas will increase from 1.2975 to 1.5030 euros.
Price cap ends on January 1, 2024
At the beginning of this year, the government imposed a price ceiling for gas and electricity. The intention was to protect households against extreme energy prices. For gas this meant a maximum rate of 1.45 euros per cubic meter, but up to a consumption of 1200 cubic meters. For everything above that you pay the market price.
From January, the price ceiling will disappear and households will have to wait and see what the market will do. For the time being, Essent deliberately keeps the gas price below 1.45 euros per cubic meter.
What about the price ceiling again? We explain a few things in the report below. This article continues after the video.
Worried about energy costs
Viewer Monique Hos is very concerned about her energy bill. She deliberately sets her heating as low as possible, even though she lives in a cold and drafty rented house. She keeps herself warm with a hot water bottle and blanket on the couch.
Monique has a variable contract and pays an installment of 300 euros per month. That’s quite a chunk out of her budget.
Fixed energy contract rates are also increasing
If you have entered into a permanent contract, the price of gas and electricity is fixed. However, you can still expect a higher energy bill. The energy tax on gas will increase and the costs for grid management will increase by around 100 euros per year.
Half a million households
In the Netherlands, it is estimated that half a million households will suffer financially if the price ceiling ends. What’s up with that? They currently have a gas and electricity contract with rates that are above the price ceiling. As soon as the price ceiling disappears, they will pay full price again. And that’s actually not necessary.
It is worth taking a closer look at your contract and preparing it for winter. There are several gas and electricity suppliers who currently offer contracts with rates that are below the price ceiling.
