The new Golf R Variant is the most powerful and dynamic station wagon version of the Volkswagen Golf in the brand’s history. Having a maximum power of 235 kW (320 hp). The company claims that the Golf R Variant remains true to the traditions of its predecessors – a practical and multifunctional car, a comfortable family van for leisure and an impressive companion with exceptional dynamics. In this case, it is also due to the 4MOTION dual transmission system with R Performance torque vectoring function for selective control of the rear axle torque.
Like the compact Golf R2, the Golf R Variant is available with the newly developed 4MOTION engine transmission system with the R Performance torque vectoring function, which enables selective torque control to the rear axle wheels. This means that traction is optimally distributed not only between the front and rear axles, but also, if necessary, individually to each of the rear wheels via the new rear differential. The innovative drive system significantly improves the road dynamics of the new Golf R Variant, and the optimized characteristics are particularly impressive in corners. At the same time, the system also contributes to increased safety – when turning, most of the traction is directed to the outer rear wheel, which significantly increases traction and at the same time maintains neutral behavior on the road.
Through the Vehicle Dynamics Manager system, the 4MOTION dual transmission is connected to other chassis control systems such as the XDS electronic differential lock and the optional DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) system, which allows for various configurations at the driver’s request. The result of all this is extremely precise and neutral behavior on the road, optimal traction and exceptional agility. In short – maximum driving pleasure. The final fine-tuning of the behavior of the new Golf R Variant was carried out by Volkswagen R specialists on the northern section of the Nürburgring.
The optional package equipment R-Performance adds two additional driving modes to the sports station wagon – in the “Special” all the basic drive parameters are set to meet the challenges of tracks such as the North section of the Nurburgring and others of this rank. Drift mode, on the other hand, offers entirely new dimensions of road behavior and is designed for sporty driving off the public road network – for maximum fun and safety in drift performances.
The Golf R Estate is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged EA888 series. In its fourth generation, this sports unit develops a maximum power of 235 kW (320 hp) and allows you to achieve acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.9 seconds. The standard top speed of 250 km / h can be increased to 270 km / h with the addition of the R-Performance package. In terms of fuel consumption, the Golf R Variant’s indicators are as follows: Fuel consumption (NEDC), in l / 100 km: urban 9.2; suburban 6.1–5.9; combined 7.3–7.2; CO2 emissions, in g / km: (combined) 166-164; energy efficiency class: D – C. Prices in Bulgaria are still unclear, but in Germany the prices of the model start from 51,585 euros, which is 1,280 euros more than the hatchback Golf R. In our country, however, it is expected to be more -low, as the hatchback version sells for BGN 87,215 with VAT.
