LIVE Techno – Our Earth has five main layers, not four as was previously known. There is an iron ball 400 miles (644 kilometers) wide, lodged deep within the Earth’s metal core according to new research conducted by scientists in Australia.
In simple terms, the Earth is like an onion that has many layers. The science of seismology has made it possible for scientists to analyze it.
If we start from the outside, these layers consist of the crust (where we live), the mantle, the outer core and the inner core. Each layer has its own special properties, composition and characteristics, with the last influencing the main processes by which it occurs on Earth.
There has been speculation about the existence of an additional layer dating back 20 years, which is claimed to have been confirmed by a new study by geoscientists, as reported on the Sputnik News website, Friday, February 24, 2023.
For their research, Thanh-Son Pham, a seismologist and postdoctoral fellow, and Hrvoje Tkalcic, from the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University in the Australian capital Canberra, used a new data set collected by measuring seismic waves (vibrations from earthquakes, volcanoes, etc) as they pass through the center of the Earth.
This is what allowed them to detect the mysterious inner core, they reveal in their paper, published in the journal Nature Communications.
