Preview: Trials of Mana – Our impressions from the demo

Trials of Mana is, as we hope we all know, a Remake of the original SNES game, which until recently has never been released by us. The game wasn’t just with us German texts Brought a few months ago, no, Square Enix also produced the game as a remake. It has not yet been released, but that is expected to change on April 24, 2020. But since March 18, 2020 there has been a demo that we watched.

Demo impression of Peter

I’ve played the demo twice so far to see how it all starts at the beginning. Because the thing is, at the start of your adventure, you can choose who you want to be your main hero and who your two companions will be. This actually leads to changes (as in the original, I never played it). So you always play a different beginning story and it also changes who joins you later and who doesn’t. E.g. Didn’t get Charlotte on the team in the first round and when I met her she didn’t join me either. In the second run I brought her into the team and only then did she join my group. Likewise, it seems to be possible to play all of the initial stories yourself, or you can watch a summary. I don’t know whether this applies to all characters in the end. Because you have to choose three characters at the beginning of the game.

The combat system is, let’s say okay. In any case, it is a typical Action-KS / Hack-n-Slay at the beginning. You hit your opponents with the circle and triangle button (PS4), you can charge your weapon with the triangle and when your bottom bar is full, you can perform special attacks. A solid and normal KS, which, admittedly, has never been anything special in the original mana parts. Unfortunately, the attacks lack something of the bang. The hit feedback is virtually non-existent, something could be improved here.

The game also turns your PS4 Pro into a jet fighter. Ask for permission to take off at the next airport, it is getting loud, very loud. Pure graphics are not even at the highest level and textures have to be loaded from time to time. The game also looks more modest on the switch. If you want it to be optically good, you should rather rely on the PS4 / PC version.

The switch version requires 4.8GB storage on your switch.

Conclusion

It can be a good, small J-RPG, which we can use well according to all the modern genre representatives.

Demo impression of Thomas

When I heard that Trials of Mana was getting a 3D remake, I was extremely skeptical. I also played SoM on both SNES and PS4 back then. Since I thought the remake itself was good, but it still suffered from certain problems, I was a bit careful about the second remake. Thanks to the release of the Collection of Mana, I was able to play trials in German for the first time and I was amazed. Therefore, the greater the joy that this great game now gets a very nice 3D implementation. But now to the demo!

First of all it should be said: Download the demo immediately, then you can continue reading during the download! Because this game is an RPG bomb! First of all, it should be said that trials are awesome in themselves, but this time the 3D implementation is more than successful! In addition to the extremely fluid gameplay and the very good soundtrack, nicely designed opponents, environments and animations are also available. As usual, the soundtrack is fantastically beautiful, the menu control is fluid and clear. The character system is just what you actually want in a current RPG today and the fights are simply said, designed just right for this action RPG!

Now we come to the game impressions themselves. I actually took 105 minutes for the Durand demo part. I didn’t even dawdle, but looked at everything in peace and took every opponent with me because I wanted to take a closer look at the level system. The fights take place on the map as usual and are so fluid from the gameplay, nothing had been up to now, or was somehow sluggish. The combat menu also has shortcut options for skills and items on 4 keys each that can be used with L1 or R1, and you can change the controlled figure with R2 or L2 at any time. This happens so seamlessly, it’s hard to believe.

What I personally liked very much as an enthusiastic Final Fantasy XIV player is that some opponents use abilities that have floor markings, so-called AoE Marks. This gives the whole game a dungeon and real boss fight factor that was missing in the old game and complements the new one very well. Of course there was no such thing at the time, or very rarely, which is why I don’t want to make the original part bad in any way, but it was sometimes too dull and too tough. What the 3D remake is pulling out completely! In addition, you now have the option to choose between 4 levels of difficulty, no matter which figure you choose! At that time, the 6 main characters were each assigned 3 levels of difficulty. You can now choose between beginners, easy, normal and difficult, no matter which starting figure you choose. It’s just super cool! Especially the “story mode” (beginners) attaches importance to story instead of fighting, so you can possibly play the story strands of all 6 characters without spending too much time on monsters or bosses. Because it is unique about this game that each character has its own intro and ending. But nothing more will be revealed here, in any case it is worth having seen them all!

The last point, what makes this game so good, you can assign different classes to your characters during the game. That means you can increase their parameters through the collected “learning points” that you receive through level ups and thus unlock new skills. Later you can assign different classes with the corresponding distribution of points, which receive new skills or spells. This free character design makes every game run unique! Since you can only level up to level 7 in the demo, you of course have hardly any character development opportunities, but these are already teasered in the demo! So be excited and just get your own impression of the game by finally starting the demo!
