Tomorrow evening, Roda JC Kerkrade will play an away match against Rijnsburgse Boys in the second round of the TOTO KNVB Cup Tournament. The kick-off at the Second Divisionist is at 9 p.m.
It is not the first time that both teams meet in the cup tournament. This poster has appeared on the calendar three times before. The competition took place at Kaalheide on November 12, 1983. Thanks to a goal by Martin van Geel, seven minutes after half-time, Roda JC won 1-0. Almost twenty years later, on September 21, 2005, Roda JC had an easy evening. In their own Parkstad Limburg Stadium, the final score was reached at half-time after goals from Andres Oper (2x), Ivan Vicelich and Sergio: 4-0.
The last time the teams were drawn together was in 2013. Roda JC won 2-1 in South Holland. Two goals from Frank Demouge made the difference. The lineup form at the time also included names such as Henk Dijkhuizen, Mark-Jan Fledderus and Kees Luijckx.
The latter looks back on that match in this preview. “Although it was a long time ago and not the first match I remember, it is typical that two goals from Frank made the difference. He was a player who, with his experience, could make a difference at such moments,” said Luijckx. The former defender also mentions the risk of these matches: “The facilities – such as smaller changing rooms – are less suitable for professional football players. That is known, so you have to take that into account. However, that is no excuse. On the field you have to show that the qualitative difference is greater.”
The now ESPN analyst emphasizes concentration and sharpness: “I preferred to start a match like this very sharply. Concentration is crucial. As a player I hated being underestimated. If a teammate thought too playfully about a match against an opponent who was weaker on paper, I immediately spoke to him about it. Fortunately, we had the right focus in 2013 to maintain the 2-1 lead.”

‘Weaker opponent on paper’ is an important addition, especially considering the number of surprises in recent years. For example, Hercules reached the eighth finals last season by beating Ajax 3-2. Interesting detail: René van der Kooij, the coach of Hercules, is at the helm of Rijnsburgse Boys this season. The coach hopes to lead Rijnsburgse Boys to the third round of the TOTO KNVB Cup tournament for the first time since 2021. In the past two seasons, the team failed in the second round (2022 against De Graafschap, 2023 against FC Groningen).

Things are going well for the team from Rijsburg in the competition. After eleven matches played, it is in first place in the Second Division. They only lost against VV Katwijk (2-1) and drew against GVVV, ACV Assen and the Royal HFC. In the second preliminary round of the TOTO KNVB Cup, it defeated Sportlust ’46 2-0.
