A week before the Parisian stage of Charléty, the Diamond League is dropping off its suitcases in Florence (Italy) this Friday evening. Mélina Robert-michon and Just Kwaou-mathey, to their advantage on Wednesday in Montreuil, will try to continue their momentum. Alice Finot will make her comeback on the steeplechase, after a promising 1500m during the Interclubs.
Unplanned stays are often the most exciting. Melina Robert-Michon et Just Kwaou-mathey will perhaps have the opportunity to confirm it this Friday evening in Florence. They are indeed among the last minute registrants on the start-list of the third stage of the Diamond League, thanks to their performances on Wednesday evening during the Montreuil meeting.
The Lyon Athletics pitcher sent her disc to 65.49 m, signing the fifth best performance of her career and achieving the minimum for the World Championships in Budapest. In Italy, she will find the gratin of the discipline, starting with the American Valarie Allmanreigning Olympic champion.
Just Kwaou-mathey also has the minimums in his pocket for Hungary. He slammed them to the nearest hundredth in Montreuil, in 13”28, second for his 110m return hurdles behind Wilhem Belocian (13”24). In Tuscany, the level of the opposition will go up another notch, with the presence of the formidable Americans Grant Holloway (12’’81) et Devon Allen (12”84), second and third best performers in the world of all time.
Finot back on the steeplechase
Alice Finot will compete in Florence in her first 3000m steeplechase since the world championships in Eugene. The CA Montreuil 93 half-founder’s only reference, at the start of the summer season, is her 1500m in the French club championship. A race won with style in the time of 4’09”46, his personal best, only a day after his return from an internship in South Africa. Already in great shape, she could get closer to her French record (9’14”34) from the outset. For this, she will try to hang on as long as possible to a head of the peloton where we should find the Kenyan Beatrice Chepkoechworld record holder, Bahrain Winfred Mutile Yavi and the Ethiopian Mekides Abebe.
Regarding the rest of the entries, we will find the European record holder in the 400m hurdles, the Dutch Femke Bol, over his favorite distance. The very promising Erriyon Knighton will be at the start of the 200m, while the reigning 100m world champion, Fred Kerley, will align to the straight line. In the women’s 1500m, the Kenyan Faith Kipyegonin gold at the Eugene Worlds, could well panic the lap times.
