Berlin (dpa) – The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, has appreciated the preventive work of sport. “If we can get more children and young people to do sports, there would be no outbreaks of violence like last New Year’s Eve because sport conveys respect and discipline,” said the CDU politician at the summer reception of the Berlin State Sports Association and the sports youth on Monday in the Olympic Stadium .
Wegner therefore calls for stronger interaction between schools, day care centers and sports clubs in order to encourage more adolescents to do sports together. The new Senate therefore wants to reduce the renovation backlog of the sports facilities so that more opportunities can be offered for children and young people.
For the new mayor, this also includes improving the situation with regard to swimming and making indoor times more attractive. In addition, swimming lessons in elementary school must lead to “all children being able to swim after elementary school.”
“Extremely” this year, Wegner is looking forward to the Special Olympics World Games, which will take place in Berlin from June 17th to 25th. With around 7,000 active participants and 20,000 volunteers, the World Games for the mentally handicapped and those with multiple disabilities are the largest multisport event in Germany since the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, which Wegner sees as a “strong signal for the sports metropolis of Berlin”. The politician is therefore hoping that many spectators will come to the opening ceremony on June 17: “The athletes deserve a full Olympic Stadium.”
