Preventive treatment against RSV offered to newborns and infants in Lanaudière

The Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) of Lanaudière would like to inform parents of newborns and infants that a new immunization program to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections is offered to the following clienteles :

  • All newborns;
  • Infants under 6 months (born since April 2, 2024);
  • Babies with increasing conditions of vulnerability the risks of complications.

Immunization against RSV consists of the administration of a preventive treatment (nirsevimab) composed of antibodies already produced to protect the newborn or baby during the virus season (fall-winter). It comes in the form of a single injection.

What is RSV?

RSV is a very common and contagious respiratory virus. It is responsible for infections of the respiratory tract and lungs. RSV circulates during the fall and winter seasons. It can cause serious complications, particularly in babies and young children, and lead to hospitalizations.

When will the immunization program start?

The immunization program with nirsevimab begins in october and first targets newborns and babies who have vulnerable conditions that can lead to complications of the disease (premature babies, Down syndrome, chronic lung disease, etc.). Subsequently, from the 4 Novemberall babies born after April 2, 2024 will be able to receive the preventive treatment.

Where can you receive preventive treatment?

Treatment is offered free of charge in hospitals, local service points (PSL), CLSCs and at the Lanaudière birth center by appointment only.
