The City Government through the Balikpapan City Health Office (Dinkes) continues to take preventive measures for the transmission of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF).
“We continue to remind the public to eradicate mosquito breeding sites, as well as close clean water containers,” Head of the Health Service, Dr. Andi Sri Juliarty, said Friday.
The eradication of mosquito nests can be done by working together to improve drainage, burying used goods or garbage which can serve as water reservoirs which can become breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the insect that transmits the dengue virus, especially by draining water areas.
The Health Office also activated cadres of larva monitoring (jumantik) in the village. They actively distribute larvicides or chemicals that kill insect larvae, especially mosquitoes.
There is also the matter of water nets, which are devices used to cover water containers so that mosquitoes that want to lay eggs cannot enter them. According to Kadinkes Juliarty, water nets are quite effective in inhibiting the development of dengue fever mosquitoes.
“We are also wary of the current weather conditions, which even though it has entered the dry season, it still rains a lot,” said Kadinkes.
Rainwater that is collected in various places can be a place for mosquitoes to lay eggs and breed.
Because of that the role of jumantik cadres is important in every environment.
As of the 23rd week of 2023, there have only been 2 victims of DHF to the point of being fatal, aka dead. Both are children.
“Hopefully there are no more victims,” hopes Kadinkes. In 2022, 7 people were recorded, most of whom were children who died.
DHF is caused by the dengue virus which enters the body through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. In the blood, the virus multiplies, causing the patient to lose a lot of red blood cells, which if left untreated can lead to death. ***
