Preventive measures against animal pox are being taken in Burgas – 2024-09-11 13:00:45

There is no animal pox

The regional governor Prof. Maria Neikova convened a meeting of the Regional Epizootic Commission on the occasion of an outbreak of small ruminant pox in the village of Voinika, municipality. Straldzha, Yambol district.

A campaign has been launched to inform mayors in municipalities, as well as persons raising small ruminants, about the small ruminant smallpox clinic, compliance with biosecurity measures in small ruminant facilities and their obligation in case of suspected disease and/or mortality immediately inform the relevant official veterinarian.

Transmission of the virus occurs through the respiratory route in close contact, but it can also penetrate through other mucous membranes or injured skin. Animals are most infectious before the appearance of neutralizing antibodies, which are detected one week after the development of clinical signs.

Morbidity and mortality vary depending on the breed, age, strain of the virus, immunity of the animals. A milder course is observed in native breeds of animals in smallpox-endemic areas, but a more severe course is observed in young and stressed animals, as well as in animals with co-infections. The incubation period ranges from 4 to 21 days, usually 1 to 2 weeks.

Currently, no sick animals have been detected in the Burgas region, but the institutions have decided on preventive measures so that the infection does not spread in the region, given the border areas between the Yambol and Burgas regions.

By Order No.RD11-2170/04.09.2024. to the executive director of the BABH, a primary outbreak of the disease “Pox in small ruminants” has been declared. A 3-kilometer safety zone has been defined around the outbreak, which includes the village of Voinika, commune. Straldzha, region Yambol. A 10-kilometer monitored zone around the outbreak has also been defined, which includes the villages of Nedyalsko, Bogorovo, Parvenets, Lyulin, Pravdino, Aleksandrovo, Polyana, Kamenets, Saransko, Tamarino and Leyarovo, municipality. Straldzha, region Yambol; in general Sredets, region Burgas – Zornitsa village.

In the municipalities of Sredets and Karnobat, the movement and transportation of susceptible animals and their products in and to the settlement is prohibited.

All small ruminants must be kept under manure. Weekly clinical examinations for small ruminant pox and other communicable diseases should be carried out at all sites. Raw milk obtained from small ruminants must be destroyed on site at the animal farm or processed in milk processing plants.

It is prohibited to trade, move and transport small ruminants. It is prohibited to organize markets and exhibitions of small ruminants. Inspections will be carried out for illegal trade and movement of small ruminants on the territory of Burgas region.

When illegal trade and movement of small ruminant animals are detected, the owners of the animals will be issued acts of administrative violation, and the animals will be killed immediately and the carcasses destroyed.

On the territory of the Burgas region, in the last 20 years, the disease was detected in the village of Stoilovo, municipality of Malko Tarnovo (21.09.2013) and the village of Gorno Yablkovo, municipality of Sredets (16.09.2023). In August and September 2024, 21 cases were found in Greece. primary foci of the disease.

Sheep and goat pox is a contagious disease of small ruminants. It is characterized by high fever, generalized papules or nodules and less commonly vesicles, lesions in the internal organs – especially the lung, and death. Sheep and goat pox is endemic to Africa – north of the Equator, the Middle East, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, parts of China and Bangladesh.
