Some of them, especially during the summer, and the accompanying high temperatures, resort to barbecuing or lighting charcoal in closed places, which may expose them to inhaling the fumes emitted as a result of combustion, and then exposure to carbon dioxide poisoning.
Dr. Tariq Ibrahim, head of the department and emergency medicine specialist at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Ain, said: Prevention of exposure to carbon dioxide gas resulting from combustion is essential, as closed spaces must be well ventilated, especially those that contain gas stoves and heaters. Avoid grilling on charcoal or using charcoal indoors.
He added: Carbon monoxide poisoning is a life-threatening disease, and the danger lies in the absence of clear signs of diagnosis, so when exposed to fumes, it is advised to leave the place immediately, breathe fresh air, and call for an ambulance immediately. He explained that the elderly, children, and pregnant women are more susceptible to infection, so it is preferable not to leave them alone in cars or closed places.
