As part of the activity of surveillance and control of infection with the West-Nile virus, which takes place nationally between June 1 and November 30, last week, a probable case of infection with the West-Nile virus was registered in Dolj county, at a 74-year-old man from Cioroiaşi, who was admitted to the Clinical Hospital for Infectious Diseases “Victor Babeş” Craiova with a serious general condition and unfavorable evolution with death.
It seems that the victim had other comorbidities. West Nile virus infection is transmitted through mosquito bites and causes a neuroinfection in adults which in most cases is subclinical, but sometimes it can also present manifestations of meningitis, meningoencephalitis or encephalitis with clear fluid; children under 15 are not affected.
To prevent infection with the West Nile virus, the Dolj Public Health Directorate recommends to the population:
to avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long pants;
to use mosquito repellent chemicals;
to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house;
to ensure the drying of puddles of water around the households, to remove containers of stagnant water;
If a person shows signs of illness: fever, headache, asthenia, vomiting, memory disorders, joint or muscle pain, or other situations that occur within 3-7 days of a possible mosquito bite, they must to urgently see the family doctor or (the uninsured) the nearest medical office.
