Preventing the Spread of Tiger Mosquitoes: Tips and Information for Staying Safe from Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Infections in Germany’s Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald District

The tiger mosquito has settled in the region for several years, both in the city of Freiburg and increasingly in communities in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. This mosquito is not only particularly annoying, but also a possible vector of some tropical viral diseases, such as dengue fever and chikungunya infections.

In view of the now rising temperatures, the first tiger mosquitoes have hatched and will start multiplying strongly from May.
The virus could then be transmitted to a tiger mosquito via infected travelers returning. Although such a case has not yet occurred in Germany, it could certainly happen if average temperatures continue to rise. Therefore, the spread of the tiger mosquito should be inhibited in order to keep the risk as small as possible.

The health department of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district office is therefore appealing to all citizens in the district to support this. The tiger mosquito uses the smallest water accumulations, such as flower coasters, watering cans or rain barrels as breeding grounds.

Therefore, these should be emptied and cleaned regularly and the rain barrels should be covered. If a residential area has not yet appeared, but suspicious mosquitoes are sighted, people should immediately get in touch with the respective contact person in the community.

When returning from trips from tropical areas, mosquito repellent should be used in the summer months as tiger mosquitoes are diurnal and nocturnal. Returning travelers should consult a doctor immediately if symptoms of an infection occur. In the case of dengue fever, for example, in addition to fever, there can also be other symptoms of varying severity, such as abdominal pain, vomiting or bleeding. Joint pain is the main symptom of Chikungunya infections.
