Preventing the Risks of Sedentary Work: Tools and Measures for Employers and Employees

An office worker, a technician in a laboratory… Many employees – and not only in the tertiary sector – carry out an activity that requires sitting for prolonged periods, while having low energy expenditure. Sometimes, without knowing it, they carry out their work in sedentary postures which, in the long run, increase the risk of developing certain diseases (cardiovascular pathologies, type II diabetes, etc.).

Although they may be inherent to certain professions or certain activities, sedentary postures are not, however, inevitable. It is possible to act by implementing prevention measures in the company, which have two objectives:

  • break sedentary postures, ideally every 30 minutes;
  • limit the total time in a sedentary posture, ideally less than 5 hours per day.

The employer must encourage employees to move and vary their postures by acting on the organization of work, the layout of the work environment and the equipment of the workstation.
Furthermore, it is important to remember that practicing physical activity, even intense, does not compensate for the harmful effects of sedentary postures on health.
