SURABAYA – Sweet, salty and fatty foods are foods favored by Indonesians. Although the average intake of fat for Indonesians is only 32%, not higher than in other countries, the intake of saturated fat is twice that of other countries. It is the source of all disease.

This was conveyed by dr. Fiastuti Witjaksono, UI Clinical Nutritionist in a webinar organized by PP Muslimat NU. In adolescents, this unbalanced consumption behavior is more pronounced.

“We need to focus on adolescents, because when nutrition is inaccurate it will affect the nutritional status and health of future generations,” he said.

He said, if adolescents do the wrong diet it will result in growth disorders. And if the diet is wrong then you will be a short teenager and will give birth to babies who are stunted.

“Plus teenagers are now accustomed to consuming fast food and junk food which contains high sugar, salt and fat,” he said.

Dr. Fiastuti said, in order to prevent stunting, the fulfillment of adolescent nutrition needs to be considered.

“Adolescent nutrition should contain nutrients needed for their growth, such as high protein, not a lot of sugar. And I do not agree if children are given sweetened thick because there is absolutely no nutrition, only sugar, “he said.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health said the magnitude of the problem of adolescent nutrition is currently visible. Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) shows, 1 in 4 adolescents are stunted, 1 in 7 adolescents are overweight and 50% of adolescents consume sweets more than once a day.
