Jakarta –
Stroke is a disease caused by blockage of blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen to the brain. This condition can cause acute loss of brain function and cause death.
Generally by society, stroke is associated as an ‘old man’s disease’. In fact, this disease can also attack young people, you know.
Neurologist specialist Dr Al Rasyid SpS(K) said that strokes can also be experienced by young people. According to him, this condition is caused in part by the lifestyle of young people who tend to be unhealthy.
“There are almost the same risk factors for stroke in older people or young people. It’s just that the heart is the most common, congenital disorders are the most common, and blood disorders are also sometimes congenital,” said Dr. Rasyid when met by detikcom, Tuesday (10/10/2023).
“The high smoking habits of young people are also a risk factor. Indeed, young people’s lifestyles have changed drastically. Depression and lack of rest can also have an influence,” he continued.
Dr. Rasyid explained that prevention is needed as early as possible to reduce the risk of stroke. One form of prevention that is important to do is adopting a healthy lifestyle such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising and avoiding smoking.
“Apart from that, also pay attention to mental health. Stress and certain mental health disorders such as depression can increase the risk of stroke at a young age,” said Dr Rasyid.
“It is important to maintain mental health by managing stress and getting the right support,” he continued.
He also appealed to the public to carry out regular health checks. This step is useful to help detect risk factors and medical conditions that can increase the risk of stroke in young people.
“Controlling risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity is very important in preventing stroke at a young age. Consult a doctor for appropriate management,” he concluded.
