Preventing Stomach Flu During Vacation: Symptoms and Tips for Parents

One common health problem is stomach flu or gastroenteritis. And this is commonly experienced by children who are more susceptible to diseases directly related to food.

Stomach flu itself is an inflammatory condition in the stomach and intestines caused by infection with bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins. Some of the symptoms that appear when someone has stomach flu include:

– Dehydration

– Electrolyte imbalance

This is a result of diarrhea and excessive vomiting and lack of fluids. If stomach flu sufferers are very young children, this condition can lead to death if not treated seriously.

– Fever, headache, chills, aches and feeling tired.

If the cause of stomach flu is a virus, then the symptoms that appear will be similar to the common cold. This causes parents to often have wrong diagnoses and wrong treatment. Take your child to the doctor for a more accurate examination.

Apart from seeing a doctor and getting the right treatment, when your child starts showing symptoms of stomach flu, avoid giving your child milk drinks, oily and spicy foods. Just drink lots of water that is cooked by boiling for 3 minutes, drink electrolytes, and eat food that is perfectly cooked. Also avoid snacks that are not guaranteed to be clean.
