“Rabies can not only be transmitted by dogs, but also by cats and monkeys. And the fatality rate for humans is almost the same, so we also need to be vigilant,” said the Head of the Livestock and Animal Health Division, the Kotim Agriculture Service, Endrayatno, Friday (7/7/2023).

Appeal related to being vigilant about rabies is intense, because of the virality of a number of reports related to rabies cases on social media.

In fact, in the Central Kalimantan region recently rabies was detected in several districts.

Kotim has not had any reports regarding this rabies disease, but anticipatory measures still need to be taken, especially for people who keep these animals.

Rabies can be identified by characteristics such as the animal looking unhealthy, salivating excessively, decreased appetite, tail curling downwards, biting imaginative objects, very aggressive, and specifically for bats more on the ground than hanging on trees or objects. tall one.

“The characteristics are almost the same, both dogs and cats. If they are exposed to rabies they will turn violent. But there are two types of rabies, there are malignant rabies and quiet rabies. So, this quiet rabies looks sick but not hyperactive, but to humans the fatal rate is the same,” he continued.

Head of Livestock and Animal Health Division (Kabid) of the Kotim Agriculture Service, Endrayatno, revealed the need to prevent rabies from an early age by conducting regular vaccinations for pets. Tribunkalteng.com/ Devita Maulina (Tribunkalteng.com/ Devita Maulina)

He added that animals that are positive for rabies will usually die on their own within 14 days at the most. If it’s more than that, chances are the animal has another disease.

By recognizing the characteristics mentioned above, it is hoped that humans can avoid encountering animals suspected of being exposed to rabies.

Meanwhile, people who keep animals are encouraged to inject their pets with the rabies vaccine regularly.

If you have been bitten, immediately wash the bite marks using soap for 15 minutes, then take them to the nearest health care facility for further medical treatment.

“Even if it’s a pet itself, it’s best not to take the animal’s bite lightly. Immediately take anticipatory measures to avoid contracting the rabies virus, “he concluded.
