In this regard, Dr. Menen Abdel Maqsoud, a consultant psychiatrist, said that the psychological disorders that the mother is exposed to after childbirth are due to the hormonal changes that the body is witnessing at this time.

Menen explained that the levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone decrease in the body after childbirth, which leads to the suffering of the mother from severe mood swings, which may develop into depression.

The consultant psychiatrist added that the prolactin hormone – which is responsible for stimulating the mammary glands in the breast to produce milk needed for breastfeeding – has negative effects on the mother’s psychological state, as it leads to mood swings.

She pointed out that the stress that the mother is exposed to after childbirth, because she feels the size of the responsibility she bears towards her child, is one of the factors that increase her risk of psychological disorders.
