Jakarta (ANTARA) – Pediatrician from the Central General Hospital (RSUP) Dr Sardjito Yogyakarta Dr Braghmandita Widya Indraswari revealed that incomplete immunization doses risk causing polio in children.
“Because there is no cure for Polio, immunization is important. Incomplete immunization in children puts children at risk of being infected with Polio,” he said in a discussion about Polio which was attended online in Jakarta, Friday.
Apart from being beneficial for children, Widya said that immunization could help other children who cannot be vaccinated due to certain congenital diseases, by creating group immunity or herd immunity, because the Polio virus is a virus that can spread quickly.
Furthermore, he stated that poor sanitation conditions, crowded living environments and unclean lifestyles were a number of other risk factors that could result in children being infected with Polio.
Preventing children from being infected with Polio is important, because according to him, two to ten percent of children infected with Polio can experience paralysis which causes lifelong disability, even death.
“If you are paralyzed, the child or individual’s legs become unable to walk. This causes disabilities in children who previously could walk, now have to use assistive devices and result in permanent disabilities, for life,” he said.
Regarding death, Widya explained that the Polio virus, which attacks the nervous and muscular systems, can also attack the nervous and muscular systems associated with the respiratory organs, so that it can disrupt the respiratory process which gradually results in death.
Separately, the Director General of Disease Prevention (P2P) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) Maxi Rein Rondonuwu said that polio cases could be prevented by carrying out complete polio immunization.
According to him, complete Polio immunization includes the first drop polio vaccine (OPV) at the age of one month, the second OPV vaccine at the age of two months, the third OPV vaccine at the age of three months, the fourth OPV vaccine and injectable Polio (IPV) at the age of four months, as well as the Second IPV at nine months of age.
“A combination of drops and injection polio immunization is given to optimize the formation of immunity against all Polio viruses,” said Maxi Rein Rondonuwu.
