There are certain factors that increase the possibility of contracting pneumonia in girls and boys: malnutrition, low birth weight, non-exclusive breastfeeding, overcrowding, incomplete vaccination schedule and exposure to tobacco and wood smoke: while in the adult population They are being over 65 years old, smoking, alcoholism, suffering from chronic diseases, not being vaccinated against pneumococcus and exposure to tobacco and wood smoke.

He recalled that the most common symptoms of pneumonia are: cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills and difficulty breathing, although it can be more serious in babies and young children, people over 65 years of age and people with health or immune system problems. weakened.

For this reason, the Ministry of Health insisted on the importance of monitoring the appearance of signs and symptoms of pneumonia, and if they are identified, it is necessary to seek immediate medical attention and, above all, not self-medicate.

He mentioned that in Mexico more than 127 thousand new cases of pneumonia and bronchopneumonia were diagnosed in 2021, mainly affecting the population at the extremes of life: children under 5 years of age and adults over 65 years of age, although it occurs at any age. Pneumonia is the single largest cause of childhood mortality worldwide, causing the death of almost one million children under five years of age each year.
