Preventing Obesity: Tips from Sequis Underwriting Department Head, Doctor Fridolin Seto

Efforts to prevent obesity can start by reducing snacking habits and limiting foods high in sugar, salt and fat, according to Head of Sequis Underwriting Department, Doctor Fridolin Seto.

“Frequently and consuming lots of high-calorie foods and processed foods can increase obesity. “When eating, add lots of vegetables, fruit and whole grains,” he said in a written statement, Saturday.

If someone is already overweight or obese and has a history of health problems, they are advised to immediately consult a nutritionist to get advice on diet and treatment that suits their body condition.

Apart from matters of intake, Seto also provides tips to help burn calories, namely limiting screen time or use of devices, getting used to physical activity and outdoor activities. This habit is good to instill from a child’s age.

“Make sport a lifestyle. “At least 3 times a week or exercise with the family on Saturday or Sunday,” he said.

What is no less important is getting enough rest and quality sleep to prevent weight gain, as well as having a medical checkup at least once a year to determine your health condition.

Obesity is a condition where the body has excess fat deposits due to an imbalance between energy intake and energy used over a long period of time.

According to Seto, the increasing obesity phenomenon occurs due to many factors, including family history. Mostly due to lifestyle factors, namely sedentary living (less movement), and consuming lots of foods and drinks high in sugar and fat.

This condition often occurs in modern and urban communities where there are increasingly fewer opportunities and desires for physical activity.

He then reminded that people with obesity are easily affected by metabolic syndrome, namely increased triglycerides, reduced HDL cholesterol, increased blood pressure so that people with obesity are very susceptible to various diseases.

Diseases that often attack obese people include asthma, infertility, osteoarthritis of the knees and hips, stopping breathing during sleep, low back pain, fatty liver, hypertension, diabetes and triggering the formation of gallstones.

Other critical illnesses also have the potential to disrupt health. It can even cause death, such as stroke, coronary heart disease.

Seto then said that as a person gets older, his body’s metabolism will decrease, making it easy for obesity to occur.

In addition, early-stage obesity is often not realized until clothes start to feel tight and weight continues to increase until the Body Mass Index (BMI) is above 30 or more.

“That’s why we need to encourage Indonesian families to pay attention to the weight of family members, including children and teenagers, because overweight and obesity usually start at a young age,” said Seto.

He believes that people can actually make health a priority in their year-end resolutions.

Regarding preventing obesity, Seto advises people to lose weight if they start to gain excess weight and maintain their weight if it is ideal.
