SENTANI – The Jayapura Regency Health Office in Papua Province asked villagers to be aware of the transmission of malaria.
Head of the Jayapura District Health Office Khairul Lie reminded residents to adopt a clean and healthy lifestyle in order to minimize the risk of malaria transmission.
Malaria is caused by the plasmodium parasite, which can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito.
Khairul said that the habit of the villagers to urinate and defecate in any place places them at risk of being bitten by mosquitoes as intermediaries for transmitting the parasite that causes malaria. Therefore, he advised the villagers to build healthy latrines.
He also pointed out the effect of poor management of livestock business activities on the increased risk of malaria transmission in villages.
“Cows that are in the pen during the rainy season where their stampedes can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” he said, adding, “If possible, the cowshed is far from housing.”
In order to reduce the risk of malaria transmission, Khairul said, the Health Service conducted counseling on efforts to prevent malaria and distributed mosquito nets to villagers.
According to him, the government has distributed mosquito nets to residents in 139 villages. “Each house can get two to three mosquito nets,” he said.
People can catch malaria if bitten by a mosquito infected with the plasmodium parasite.
According to an information broadcast on the official website of the Ministry of Health, the female Anopheles mosquito, which is the intermediary for the transmission of the malaria-causing parasite, deposits its eggs in the water.
While caring for their eggs, mosquitoes look for food from evening to dawn and in the process mosquitoes can transmit the plasmodium parasite to humans.
Symptoms of malaria do not immediately appear when a person is bitten by a mosquito carrying the parasite.
People with good immunity have a smaller risk of contracting malaria. People with poor immunity can experience symptoms of malaria 10 to 15 days after being bitten by a mosquito.
The initial symptoms of malaria are usually flu-like. In addition, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are also common.
If not treated immediately, people who catch malaria can become seriously ill. If not treated quickly, parasitic infections that cause malaria can cause complications such as kidney failure, convulsions, mental disorders, unconsciousness (coma), and often lead to death.
