Preventing Germs in Restrooms: Expert Recommends Covering Toilet Seats with Cloth or Gloves

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Toilet seats (seat toilets) can contain germs so covering them with cloth or special gloves can be the best choice for someone, according to an infection prevention expert from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Kadi Banjoko, MSPH, CIC.

“It’s not uncommon for us to see splashes of urine on the toilet seat,” he said as broadcast by Livestrong, Sunday (4/6).

Germs from feces can easily be sprayed from the toilet recess onto the seat, as well as when someone flushes the feces or sometimes it is called a toilet plume which carries a risk of transmitting viruses and bacteria that cause infection, according to a review in the ‌Journal of Applied Microbiology‌ in December 2021.

Banjoko admits that sitting on a toilet seat is not the most direct way to come into contact with germs in the restroom because germs will need a way to get from the seat to one’s skin.

Especially if he doesn’t have any scratches or cuts on his feet, so it’s impossible for the germs in the toilet seat to enter his body and infect him.

Except, if he touches the toilet seat directly with your hands and then touches your face without washing your hands first.

Even so, still, there is always a small chance that someone can experience health problems just by sitting on a toilet seat. So, taking precautions is worth it.

Apart from toilet seats, bathroom door handles, faucets and soap dispensers are almost guaranteed to be contaminated with insects that can harm health, according to a study in the ‌Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care‌ in June 2020.

In this case, the best way to protect yourself is to wash your hands thoroughly after doing activities in the bathroom. Banjoko suggested that you should use a tissue when closing the faucet and door handle when leaving the room.
