Diabetic retinopathy can generally occur in people with diabetes who do not manage their condition well and have other comorbidities such as high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and often experience hyperglycemia, said ophthalmologist Dr. Sesaria Rizky Kumalasari, Sp. m
According to Sesaria, initially diabetic retinopathy does not cause significant symptoms and a number of symptoms such as blurred vision, floating spots, changes in color vision, and loss of vision will only be felt when the diabetic retinopathy is at a more severe stage.
“Therefore, annual eye fundus examinations are important for people with diabetes to identify diabetic retinopathy at an early stage,” said he, who practices at Pondok Indah – Pondok Indah Hospital, in a written statement, Monday (4/12).
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication that can be experienced by people with type 1 or 2 diabetes due to disrupted blood vessels in the retina of the eye due to high blood sugar levels.
Therefore, in order to avoid or prevent complications including diabetic retinopathy, diabetes patients are advised to carry out regular comprehensive health checks such as blood sugar levels, kidney function and monitoring the condition of their feet. For the feet, patients can undergo a Doppler ultrasound examination if they feel pain in the feet, to prevent further infections or diabetic foot disease which can lead to amputation.
Apart from that, they must also carry out medical therapy and remain physically active and do light exercise under the supervision of a doctor. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that healthy people aged 18-64 years do 150 minutes of physical activity per week. This also applies to people with diabetes.
Sports medicine expert Dr Grace Joselini Corlesa, Sp. KO, through the same written statement, said that exercise can help control body weight, prevent someone from becoming overweight or obese and help manage blood sugar levels in the body.
“When exercising, muscles need more glucose as an energy source. This can help reduce high blood sugar levels and increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin,” said he, who practices at the Sport Medicine Injury and Recovery Center at Pondok Indah Hospital – Bintaro Jaya.
Grace added that exercise can also reduce stress, improve sleep quality and improve mood, which also has a positive effect on mental health and overall quality of life.
However, even though it has a multitude of benefits, people with diabetes still have to pay attention to several things when exercising so it is highly recommended to consult a doctor first before exercising.
On the other hand, patients need to ensure blood sugar levels remain normal during exercise, warm up before exercising and cool down after exercising, and ensure adequate fluid intake and do not force themselves or stop if they are too tired.
