Realitarakyat.com – Deputy Chair of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly Lestari Moerdijat said that the Government’s intervention through the implementation of policies related to the control of non-communicable diseases must be carried out consistently as an effort to reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia.
“The diabetes problem is before our eyes, so it requires serious attention from all parties,” said Lestari in a statement received in Jakarta, Thursday (16/11/2023).
Lestari said this when opening an online discussion with the theme “Beware of Diabetes Undermining Productive Age” held by the Denpasar 12 Discussion Forum, Wednesday (15/11/2023).
According to Lestari, this threat must be anticipated and paid attention to so that the demographic bonus does not turn into a burden.
Moreover, according to World Health Organization (WHO) records, the highest number of diabetes cases is Type 2 Diabetes which can be prevented with proper health understanding and efforts.
“This condition must be a concern, especially since diabetes attacks people of productive age,” he said.
Lestari also encourages stakeholders to be truly active in carrying out prevention through implementing a number of relevant policies, in order to maximize the benefits of the demographic bonus towards a Golden Indonesia 2045.
Apart from that, he believes that the initiation of movements to improve the quality of healthy life also needs to be encouraged. According to Lestari, this can be done with education and improving health services through an integrated health system.
The discussion featured speakers including the Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health Eva Susanti, General Chair of the Indonesian Doctors Association Muhammad Adib Khumaidi, and General Chair of the Indonesian Food and Nutrition Experts Association Hardinsyah.
Eva said that readiness to realize the demographic bonus must be accompanied by efforts to build a healthy golden generation.
Because, according to Eva, the current condition of diabetes cases in Southeast Asia is ranked sixth with the number of sufferers at 90.2 million or 8.7 percent of the population.
The number of cases, said Eva, will continue to rise if there are no efforts to control risk factors, especially since diabetes is the mother of all diseases.
According to Eva, lifestyle, such as smoking, lack of physical activity, and eating minimal fruit and vegetables, can increase the risk of developing diabetes. In fact, diabetes can be overcome if people adopt a healthy and appropriate lifestyle.
Therefore, Eva encourages people to measure their blood sugar at least once a month so they can know their blood sugar condition regularly.
Eva also assessed that the Government has tried to take preventative steps through early detection in the health service system and management of sufferers.
Strengthening financing for national health insurance also supports a number of diabetes prevention and treatment efforts.
Eva encourages mandatory regulations that include information on the nutritional value of food to be enforced consistently, while the public must care about this information. (ndi)
