The Trenggalek District Health Office, East Java, appealed to residents to promote mosquito nest eradication (PSN) activities as an early step in anticipating an outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF).
“Good environmental hygiene and sanitation are key in breaking the chain of transmission of the dengue epidemic,” said Head of the Trenggalek District Health Office Sunarto in Trenggalek, Wednesday.
The Trenggalek Health Office is intensively conducting socialization on PSN as DHF cases have increased in the area in the last two weeks.
Referring to the report as of 14 July 2023, there were 79 residents infected with DHF. Of that number, Sunarto said 78 people recovered, while one person died. The victim of the ‘deadly’ mosquito bite came from the working area of the Bendungan Health Center.
“These cases are spread across 19 working areas of the Puskesmas, for the three Puskesmas there have been no confirmed cases,” he said.
This is not the first time that DHF cases have caused death in Trenggalek.
In 2022, there will be 268 dengue cases with two deaths. In addition, referring to the annual cycle, DHF cases increase at the end of the year in the November-December range and persist in the January-February phase.
“Then it decreased and started again from May to July. Even in 2022, DHF cases were recorded until September. For this reason, we are optimistic that we can control DHF together, especially with the 3M Plus movement,” he said.
PSN can be done independently at home with 3M plus, including draining water reservoirs at least once a week. Periodization is done to prevent mosquitoes from growing up.
“The cycle is ten to three weeks, when the draining is more than that, the mosquitoes are already adults. Meanwhile, for places where it is not possible to be drained, you can use abate,” he said.
Another step is to seal all stagnant water that has the potential to become a breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus.
Then take advantage by recycling used goods that have the potential for stagnant water so that they are vulnerable to becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes that cause DHF.
“For the pluses, you can use mosquito repellent, sprinkle lavarside powder, keep fish that eat mosquito larvae and so on,” he added.
The PSN movement with 3 M plus is considered effective in stopping the spread of dengue fever cases. The reason is through these activities can eradicate up to the larvae.
Meanwhile, fumigation or fumigation is only effective in eradicating adult mosquitoes. Beyond that, the materials used for fumigation also cause side effects.
