Preventing Dengue Fever: Tips from Indonesian Doctors Association for Transition Season Health

CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta – Each season has its own characteristics, and the current transition season also presents serious challenges for public health. One of them is the increase in cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). The Indonesian Doctors Association shares a review of how to prevent dengue fever.

Chairman of the Executive Board of the IDI Association, Mohammad Adib Khumaidi, explained that high levels of air humidity accelerate the development of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector of dengue fever.

“So this transition season is a season that dengue mosquitoes really want, so the potential for an increase in dengue cases will be very high. “The basis of this disease cannot be separated from the existing climate and weather, so until around June there will be a potential increase in dengue cases, so people need to be careful,” Adib told the media at a press conference in Jakarta, Saturday.

Adib also reminded the public to increase awareness of dengue fever, which is not enough to just rely on health facilities provided by hospitals, but also needs to be actively involved in prevention efforts.

Prevention of dengue fever can start from yourself, such as maintaining personal health by increasing your body’s endurance, getting enough rest, consuming nutritious food, and exercising regularly.

“On a personal basis first, people must personally maintain their health, increase their immune system, rest, eat nutritious food, eat more fruit, and get enough exercise as an effort to strengthen our own immune system,” explained Adib.

Furthermore, Adib said that environmental factors also played a role in the increase in dengue cases. The habit of washing hands that has been instilled during the COVID-19 pandemic must be maintained.

Apart from that, environmental cleanliness is key in preventing dengue fever. Efforts such as 3M (draining, covering, burying) must be carried out consistently, including the use of abate larvicide (a drug that kills mosquito larvae).

“What is even more important is that if we discuss environmental factors, then of course efforts related to environmental cleanliness are very important, 3M must be carried out as an effort to prevent the proliferation of dengue, including abate larvicide and so on,” he said.

In addition, first-level health facilities must improve surveillance capabilities. The finding of just one case of dengue fever in an area must be followed up immediately to prevent the emergence of other cases.

By implementing a structured prevention mechanism, it is hoped that the community can play an active role in maintaining health and reducing the risk of dengue transmission.
