Preventing Dengue Fever, Semarang Prison Checks for Hygiene from Mosquito Larvae in Residential Blocks – Hello Semarang

HELLO SEMARANG – Class I Semarang Correctional Institution (Lapas) continues to provide maximum services, especially health, to inmates or prisoners who are currently serving their sentence in prison residential blocks.

One of them is preventing dengue fever. In order to make this happen, the Semarang Prison held an activity to check the cleanliness of mosquito larvae in the residential block area, Saturday (9/4/2022). This examination was carried out by the Semarang Lapas Primary Clinic Doctor Team and the Medical Team from the Ngaliyan District Health Center.

The activity begins with inspection of mosquito larvae in the bathrooms of the inmates’ residential blocks, water reservoirs such as tubs, buckets and reservoirs as well as drains that allow standing water to breed mosquitoes.

The Head of Semarang’s Headquarters, Tri Saptono Sambudji, explained that the implementation of this mosquito larvae inspection was not only to prevent dengue fever in prisons, but also to teach inmates about the importance of keeping the environment clean.

“Checking for mosquito larvae is very important so that inmates are protected from various diseases, considering that dengue fever was once a deadly disease, as well as making them aware of maintaining cleanliness, especially in terms of water storage,” said Tri Saptono.

WL the results are generally good. Most of the residential rooms that were inspected were clean enough and no mosquito larvae were found,” he continued.

Kalapas hopes that the inmates can participate to become health actors in providing education to their fellow colleagues regarding the importance of keeping the environment clean. This is done in order to be able to raise awareness for all inmates to be responsible for the surrounding environment and create a healthy and happy community.

Meanwhile, the Medical Team of the Ngaliyan Community Health Center, Malika Puspahadi, said that if there were mosquito larvae on the surface of the water, they should be removed immediately. According to him, mosquito larvae will usually appear on the surface of the water to breathe and it must be drained immediately.

To eradicate these larvae, you can do various ways, one of which is sprinkling abate powder (abateization) and applying 3M, namely draining, closing and burying.

“Removing mosquito larvae is easier than controlling them when they become adults. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes can breed in clean puddles around our environment,” said Malika.
