Preventing Dengue and Zika: Public Health Service of Curaçao Calls for Community Action

WILLEMSTAD – The Public Health Service of Curaçao calls on the population to take a joint approach to mosquito nuisance, with special attention to the destruction of breeding grounds now that the rainy season has arrived. The Aedes aegypti, better known as the dengue or tiger mosquito, is the main spreader of diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika, and thrives in standing water in people’s habitats.

Dengue has recently been diagnosed on several islands in the Caribbean, with dengue type 2 standing out. According to the health department, it is necessary to intensify efforts to destroy these breeding grounds. To this end, the service asks for active contributions from the residents of Curaçao.

Measures that can be taken include regularly checking and cleaning flower pots with standing water, saucers that hold water, and the use of larvicide. It is also advisable to place sand or soil in pots with stagnant water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs there. It is also important to inspect the yard and garden for the presence of objects such as tires and containers in which water can remain, and to keep them clean or to throw them away.

Industrial companies are urged to take measures against mosquito nesting, such as storing tires under a roof and disposing of unused tires to landfill.

Personal protection against mosquito bites is also essential. This can be done by smearing the body with insect repellents that are available at local botikas.
