KWF Cancer Control reports that according to a TNO study, many cases of cancer can be prevented every year.

According to the research, an unhealthy lifestyle and living in an unhealthy living environment in the Netherlands contribute to the risk of developing cancer. Up to 40,000 cancer cases could possibly be prevented every year with measures that make it easier for people, among other things, not to smoke, to eat healthily and to protect themselves well against the sun. For people who live in an unhealthy living environment, for example close to polluting industry, measures are of course needed on the part of the polluter.

In terms of lifestyle, the new figures show that smoking remains by far the leading cause of cancer in the Netherlands, according to KWF. An estimated 19,095 diagnoses annually, 16 percent of all cancer cases, can be attributed to this. Other important causes are sun exposure with 6,374 cases per year, approximately 5 percent of all cancers, and unhealthy diet with 6,452 diagnoses, also approximately 5 percent. “This mainly concerns little fruit, vegetables and dietary fiber and too much processed meat,” KWF reports.
