Preventing and Treating Swimming Sports Injuries: Tips from a Specialist Doctor

Swimming sports | Swimming Sports Injuries

Who doesn’t like swimming? Especially when the weather is hot and hot, swimming is a fun sport. Apart from that, swimming is a sport that is quite safe because it is a low impact sport.

Swimming is even recommended to help the recovery process for several types of injuries, because water helps support the body, thereby reducing the load on the joints and bones.

However, this does not mean that swimming is free from the risk of injury. Swimming can still cause injuries like other sports, and can be quite dangerous because it occurs in water.

Injuries in swimming most commonly occur due to excessive use of muscles or long duration of training and incorrect swimming technique. Other risk factors are a lack of stretching and warming up, as well as the presence of certain disease conditions.

Types of Injuries in Swimming Sports

The types of injuries that can occur in swimming include:

  • Muscle cramp, namely muscle contractions that appear suddenly and are uncontrollable. Muscle cramps can last for a while and cause severe pain.
  • Neck and back injuries, usually characterized by pain and tension in the neck and back muscles. This can occur due to excessive muscle use and hyperextension of the spine when performing some swimming movements.
  • Shoulder injurySwimmer’s shoulder, often called swimmer’s shoulder, is one of the most common injuries in swimmers with an incidence rate of around 60%. This is because swimming movements rely on the muscles of the arms and shoulders. Constant repetitive movements and excessive stress on the shoulders can result in pain and inflammation in the muscles and tissues of the shoulder joint. In severe shoulder injuries, tears can also occur in the muscle and cartilage tissue of the shoulder joint.
  • Knee injury, occurs more often in swimmers who use the breaststroke, and is known as breaststroker’s knee. Breaststroker’s knee occurs due to wide kicks and excessive rotation of the knee when swimming breaststroke, causing pain and inflammation in the muscles and tissue of the knee joint.
  • To prevent and reduce the risk of injury, there are several things you need to pay attention to and do, including:

    • Learn proper swimming techniques and movements.
    • Be aware of your swimming abilities, don’t force yourself but do swimming as a pleasure and lifestyle for your health.
    • Choose and use the right apparel (clothing and glasses). The right clothing is important so that swimming can be done comfortably.
    • Warm up and dynamic stretches before exercising and finish cooling down with static stretches.
    • Do muscle strength training to strengthen and prepare your body muscles when swimming.
    • Eat simple carbohydrate foods 1-2 hours before swimming, such as fruit or bread, to provide the energy needed during swimming.

Good preparation before swimming will provide optimal exercise benefits, including:

    • Improves mood, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves sleep quality for the better.
    • Helps burn calories and maintain an ideal weight.
    • Increases muscle strength and maintains healthy bones and joints.
    • Improves fitness and health of the heart and blood vessels.
    • Increases lung capacity and health, as well as improves the quality of breathing techniques.
