[메디컬투데이=김준수 기자] In summer, many people enjoy playing in the water to cool off from the heat. In addition to visiting valleys, swimming pools, and water parks, there are also cases where you can enjoy water sports such as windsurfing, water skiing, and wakeboarding in the sea.
The part that is often injured while enjoying these leports is the shoulder, but among them, you need to be careful of rotator cuff tear. Rotator cuff tear refers to a disease in which the four tendons involved in the rotational movement and stability of the shoulder are ruptured due to various causes.
The four tendons are the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis that connect the shoulder and arm. If the rotator cuff is ruptured, it is difficult to heal naturally, so it is good to visit the hospital and get a precise diagnosis. This is because simple treatments such as compresses or patches do not improve.
There are many causes of rotator cuff tear. In addition to excessive use of the shoulder through water sports, there are degenerative changes due to aging, traumatic rupture due to a strong external impact, and reduced blood circulation in the rotator cuff.

It is important to accurately identify the cause and then begin treatment. If treated at an early stage, it is possible to recover to a large extent through non-surgical treatment that does not require anesthesia or incision, such as injection treatment, extracorporeal shock wave treatment, or manual treatment.
“Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, which is widely used in the treatment of rotator cuff tear, is a treatment method that can be expected to regenerate tissue by attracting blood vessels while the shock wave stimulates and activates cells,” said Lee Hyeon-cheol, director of Yongin Anapa Pain Medicine. The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and it is quick to return to daily life, reducing pain and improving function.”
“A rotator cuff tear also requires daily life management. Sufficient stretching should be done before exercising, and care should be taken not to overdo it when enjoying water sports. Also, it is good to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder with exercises that do not put too much strain on the shoulder.”
