Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory process of the pancreas, an accessory gland of the digestive tube, located in the upper left part of the abdomen. This condition has a sudden onset with a marked change in the person’s general condition.
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “Acute pancreatitis is a rather severe pathology, which requires hospitalization and treatment at the level of the surgical ward.”
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “As usual, it’s the sickness of the holidays. For Moldovans, very fatty, spicy food is required, with alcohol consumption, which is a risk factor. It has a spasm action on the gastric tract, and especially on the pancreatic ducts, which stops the release of pancreatic enzymes in the intestine. Respectively, stopping this leads to the self-destruction of the pancreatic gland and the patients request an ambulance with violent pain in the abdomen, with uncontrollable vomiting, feeling sick, suffocation, sweating.”
Among the main causes are excessive alcohol consumption, gallstones, hypertriglyceridemia, some viral infections and the administration of certain medications.
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “Men, middle-aged people and the elderly are more affected, because they also have chronic diseases of the gastric tract, are obese, have high cholesterol levels. They also abuse food and alcohol.”
The violent pains that the patient faces do not yield to the medicines available at home, that is why, usually, he calls for specialized medical help.
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “At the request of the ambulance, the patient is admitted to the hospital, where a series of investigations are carried out. Blood analysis – showing leukocytosis, high levels of amylase and lipase. Instrumental investigations are also carried out, such as abdominal ultrasound and abdominal tomography. According to the abdominal tomography, we establish the degree of severity of the disease. We have severe disease, moderate disease and minimal damage to the pancreas.”
The treatment of acute pancreatitis can vary depending on the severity of the damage to the pancreas and the associated symptoms.
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “The prognosis of the disease is different. As usual, the prognosis is satisfactory, but we also have serious cases, which require surgical intervention, treatment with antibiotics, painkillers, and quite strong anti-inflammatories.”
The patient can develop severe complications such as: malnutrition, pancreatic pseudocyst, infections, diabetes or even death.
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “That’s why we need a healthy lifestyle. Let’s not get into serious situations that we develop ourselves.”
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “Preventively, before celebrating, we must have a balanced regime. We need to have a well-prepared breakfast, to have a lunch, so that in the evening we don’t abuse food. We must eat in moderation, this is the golden rule. We do not forget to include fruits, vegetables and necessarily hydration in our diet. Let’s avoid abuses. It is a rule not only for holidays, but also every day.”
Lilia MACARI, GASTROENTEROLOGIST: “An annual check-up of each person would be welcome. A set of laboratory analyses, instrumental investigations, such as abdominal ultrasound, consultation with a specialist.”
Acute pancreatitis can also be prevented by treating biliary diseases, avoiding the abuse of drugs, processed products, coffee and alcohol, and maintaining a normal weight.
