Acting Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Ministry of Health Dr. dr. Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, DHSM, MARS, said that there are 10,515 people with thalassemia in Indonesia.

“Thalassemia major is passed down from parents who are either a person or a carrier. Therefore, early detection efforts to find thalassemia carriers are expected to prevent intermarriage between carriers so as to prevent the birth of babies with thalassemia major, “said Dr. Maxi in the Media Briefing for World Thalassemia Day 2021 which was held virtually, Wednesday (5/5).

As a hereditary disease, Dr. Maxi appealed to the public to take precautions through early detection before marriage. This becomes important to prevent the birth of babies with thalassemia. Because, people with thalassemia have to do a variety of treatments. Starting from adding vitamins to routine blood transfusions for life in cases of thalassemia major.
