Prevent the New Swine Flu Virus, Experts: Tighten Animal Surveillance

Jakarta, Gatra.com – Epidemiologist of the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), Bayu Satria Wiratama said that in order to prevent the transmission of the latest swine flu virus (G4 E4 H1N1), the government through the Ministry of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture) must tighten surveillance of swine animals.

Surveillance itself is a method of collecting, processing, analyzing, and interpreting data that is carried out continuously and the information is conveyed as a reference for taking action. Bayu explained, It was important to prevent transmission of Zoonoses or from animals to humans.

“Because he is Zoonotic, so the source is from animals in this case pigs, which can then be transmitted to humans. What needs to be tightened is supervision on pig farms, “Bayu said when contacted on Monday (6/7).

Transmission of the G4 E4 H1N1 virus was also explained by Bayu as the previous H1N1 swine flu. When an animal is attacked by this virus, the animal will release a liquid which is then the source of transmission.

“Transmission can also occur indirectly, such as the source of transmission attached to objects around pigs, which then humans interact or touch the object,” said Bayu.

In addition, related to the prevention of this new virus, Bayu explained that the method could be carried out exactly as prevention of the H1N1 virus. Therefore, Bayu encourages the pig farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture to be transparent, if a pig is found which then looks unhealthy and shows symptoms of contracting the virus.

“In the Ministry of Agriculture there is also a report system. That must be tightened. For example in the export / import of pigs it must be recorded clearly, where the origin of imports must be from, for example, “said Bayu.

While in pig farmers, Continue Bayu, must also be strict. Farmers are expected to continue to adhere to health protocols, tighten monitoring, and if there are unhealthy pigs immediately convey. “Most of the farmers do not want to report, for fear of losing money. Even though it’s for the sake of health that must be put forward, “continued Bayu.

Despite many similarities, there are differences from the H1N1 H1V1 virus V4 with the previous H1N1 virus, mainly in the molecular structure of the virus. Thus, Bayu said it was not certain that the H1N1 vaccine could work in the new virus.

“Maybe it will not be one hundred percent suitable too, because the structure is also different right. So, testing for the old H1N1 might also not be accurate for the current virus. So it must be studied further in advance, “he concluded.
