Prevent Airborne Spread, Choose Tighter Masks – Online Alert

MEDAN, Waspada.co.id – Some time ago, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 was widely discussed, because it can be transmitted through airborne or air.

Where in a recent study found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus thrives better when it becomes airborne. That raises concerns that loose-fitting masks provide only “simple control” against infection.

The study, led by the University of Maryland School of Public Health, reports that the virus has moved towards “more efficient aerosol generation”.

Researchers say this means that health measures will be needed to protect those working in public and indoors, until vaccination rates reach “very high.” In addition to vaccines, there is a need for increased ventilation, increased filtration, UV air sanitation, and tighter masks.

The study was published on September 14, 2021, in the peer-reviewed medical journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. The results of the new study show that people infected with the Alpha variant emit 43 to 100 times more virus into the air when they breathe in than people infected with the original strain.

The virus spreads from the nose and mouth of an infected person through large droplets when in close proximity. “We know that the Delta variant circulating now is even more contagious than the Alpha variant.

“Our research shows that the variant continues to get better at traveling by air, so we must provide better ventilation and wear a suitable mask, in addition to vaccinations, to help stop the spread of the virus,” Milton said in a press release.

The researchers found that the amount of virus in the air from infection with the Alpha variant was 18 times more than the amount of virus found in nasal swabs and saliva.

In addition, the researchers found that face coverings significantly reduced the amount of virus that was breathed into the air from those infected with Covid-19 by about 50 percent.

But loose cloths and surgical masks cannot completely prevent virus particles from the air. Citing Times of India, Sunday (19/9/2021), the most effective way to protect yourself from harmful aerosols is to avoid crowded places and maintain social distance.

Also avoid rooms with little or no ventilation, and wear a mask properly at all times.

“When used properly, air purifiers can help reduce airborne contaminants, including viruses, in homes or confined spaces,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says. Finally, prioritize vaccination because it can avoid severe infections and reduce the risk of hospitalization.(wool/kompas.com/data3)
