Presumably nationwide disruption of payment transactions with credit and debit cards

Paying with certain credit or debit cards is not possible in many places on Thursday. Since early morning, there have been increasing reports from retailers of problems with card payments. The type and extent of the disruption are currently unclear, said a spokesman for the German banking industry. Payments with Girocard are not affected, it was said. However, the problem does not seem to be limited to a specific region. Rather, payment transactions with credit and debit cards seem to have been paralyzed nationwide. Previously, the Bavarian Broadcasting (BR) reports.

Outage at Telecash and First Data: Technical problems with processing services

Meanwhile, various media and X-Users reported a total failure of the payment service Telecash. A note can currently be found on its website: “There is currently a technical problem with some of our processing services at Telecash. We are working hard to resolve the problem and will inform our customers as soon as possible.”

The reason for the disruption was problems at an international IT service provider that also processes credit and debit card payments for many German banks and savings banks, according to the Federal Office for Information Security. “We are analyzing the further facts together with payment system operators and providers,” the spokesman for the banking industry continued. Those involved are working hard to resolve the disruption. Based on current knowledge, a cyberattack can be ruled out.

The IT service provider affected is First Data, which belongs to the US group Fiserv, a company spokesperson said when asked. There is a technical problem with some processing services. “We are working hard to solve the problem and will inform our customers as soon as possible,” they said.
