The Vito Fazzi of Lecce, with the joint and coordinated work of the Neurology-Stroke Unit and Neuroradiology together with 118 and the Emergency Department, has been recognized as a ‘Diamond’ Centre, the highest recognition attributable to a Stroke Center within the ESO program – Angels Awards, in the first quarter of 2024, and as a Platinum Center in the second quarter of 2024.
Further certifications for the Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce, which has already qualified as a ORO Center in the fourth quarter of 2023. The ESO-Angels Awards are awards given to the hospitals of the European Stroke Organization that have demonstrated the best treatment paths at the service of stroke patients.
Furthermore, according to the Agenas 2023 report, Vito Fazzi is the Apulian facility that carries out the highest number of hospitalizations for cerebral ischemia and the seventh in Italy for the number of intravenous treatments with mortality rates and hospital readmissions within 30 days in line with the data national. Based on these parameters, Vito Fazzi is one of the few territorial units in Italy to have almost achieved the set objectives. Since the beginning of the year, 238 procedures have been performed: 164 intravenous thrombolysis, 118 mechanical thrombectomies (endovascular revascularization) and of these 44 are combined (patients undergoing intravenous thrombolysis and thrombectomy). ASL Lecce has been working for years to improve the pre-hospital and intra-hospital path in the management of cerebral ischemia. In fact, company protocols have been active for years which provide for teleconsultation with the neurology-stroke unit and the 118 pre-alert in cases of suspected cerebral ischemia to allow quick access to the emergency room and neuroradiology. The importance of early clinical assessment is connected both to the possibility of undertaking therapy in the very early stages of the event and to the need to implement early prevention of a possible deterioration of the neurological picture and neurological and/or medical complications. Cerebral ischemia is in fact a “time-dependent” pathology: early treatment is fundamental for the outcome of the disease and it is essential that the treatment ‘network’ functions to guarantee the best possible therapy in the shortest possible time and to ensure a greater probability of recovery and the least possible disability for patients. For this reason, the Vito Fazzi Hospital has been adhering to the ‘CT project’ for years, which involves the start of the administration of the thrombolytic drug in Neuroradiology, with a reduction in treatment times and an improvement in their effectiveness. Last November 1st, on the occasion of the World Day against Cerebral Ischemia, a free, open-access screening morning was held at the Fazzi DEA, during which approximately 90 color Doppler ultrasounds of the neck vessels and 30 cardiological visits in addition to the evaluation of vascular risk factors
