Press: Watson wants to set up branch in French-speaking Switzerland – Switzerland

The German news site Watson wants to create a branch in French-speaking Switzerland, report “Le Matin Dimanche” and the “NZZ am Sonntag”. The launch is scheduled for January 2021. The editorial staff, made up of 20 journalists, will be headed by Sandra Jean, former editor-in-chief of Le Nouvelliste and former editor-in-chief of Le Matin Dimanche.

Watson director Michael Wanner wants to anchor the editorial office in French-speaking Switzerland and is seeking regional investors to co-finance the project. Tracks have been launched on the side of private investors and foundations, but “if we don’t find the ideal investor, we can also go it alone”, says Michael Wanner in “Le Matin Dimanche”.

In the “NZZ am Sonntag”, he explains the reasons for this expansion across the röstis barrier: the good development of the portal in German-speaking Switzerland, the will of the advertising sector to launch simultaneous campaigns in the two linguistic regions and the journalistic impoverishment suffered by French-speaking Switzerland in recent years.
