Press release from the staff of Miriam Makeba college in Aubervilliers

Press release from Miriam Makeba college staff meeting during union information hour on 11/21/2023

On Monday November 20, 2023, a serious incident occurred during physical education and sports class. A fight broke out between two students in the same class. During this fight, a sharp object was pulled out, injuring the two students and one of the two teachers who had intervened to separate the students. The three injured were taken to hospital for treatment. Mobile security teams from the rectorate were dispatched to set up a listening cell at the college.

This event takes place in a context of increasing violence that we have been experiencing since the start of the year, and we are seeing a deterioration in the school climate: many fights and a growing feeling of insecurity within our establishment. Numerous alerts were made by adults at the school, but these were not enough to calm an already very tense climate. We feel helpless and affected by this situation. Our start to the year was marked by the non-replacement of our deputy head of establishment for more than 6 weeks.

For years we have been alerting the rectorate to the lack of human resources to supervise all students (educational assistant, teaching assistant and AESH) in optimal safety conditions. It therefore seems essential to us to place this event in a broader context to understand the violence of the incident.

We are expecting a strong educational response to this traumatic event, helping to calm the school climate and ensure the immediate safety of all.
