On this tragic 10th anniversary marking the start of the civil war in Syria, which has already claimed hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of refugees, Greece, which actively promotes the establishment of peace and stability in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean on the basis of international law, continues to support efforts to achieve a political solution.
This solution will have to guarantee the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country on the basis of United Nations Security Council resolution 2254.
To achieve this solution, the foreign armed forces will have to withdraw immediately from the territory of the country. In addition, Syria will have to cease to be a ground of confrontation of the foreign interests which act to the detriment of the country and the Syrian people.
In this context, Greece continues to fully support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.
It must be recalled in this case that Greece continues to welcome on its territory thousands of Syrian refugees to whom it grants humanitarian and social assistance, thereby carrying a heavy burden in relation to its capacities.
