MAGNIFICENT FEAST

Culinary experiences in the historical monuments of Baden-Württemberg

STUTTGART, May 16, 2022 – Immerse yourself in the past while pampering your palate and letting your soul be caressed – a journey into the past can hardly be more enjoyable. It almost sounds as if it had sprung from the fairytale world of Cockaigne, but in the impressive palaces, stately castles, old monasteries and extensive gardens and parks in southern Germany, culinary delights and history combine in a very real way to create a stately treat. At a coffee party in noble company, at “L’Apéritif au Jardin” or on a visit to the monastery vineyard. Walk in to sensual pleasures and idleness with culture.

Aperitif in the countryside – Gamburg Castle

The Gamburg is wild and romantic. The legendary Stauferburg in Taubertal is not only famous for its impressive knight’s hall with the unique “Barbarossa frescoes”, but also for its baroque park. This was restored by the owner family according to old templates and today welcomes its guests as a hedge garden with nymph fountains and water features, obelisks and palm trees. During the evening “L’Apéritif au Jardin” Hans-Georg von Mallinckrodt and his wife Nicole will guide you through their garden paradise. Accompanied by the quiet sounds of the “Burgbarden” you go with a good drop in your hand into the green, where seating invites you to take a break and just enjoy life.

Enjoying wine in the World Heritage – Maulbronn Monastery

In order to be able to provide for themselves, the Cistercian monks of the Maulbronn monastery created a unique cultural landscape in the middle of the 12th century, which shaped the region economically and culturally. In addition to agriculture, handicrafts and animal husbandry, this also included viticulture. The complex is considered to be the most completely preserved medieval Cistercian monastery complex north of the Alps. It is not without reason that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the men’s refectory, the former dining room, a column with a peculiar gutter reminds of the monks enjoying wine. According to legend, the monastery wine once flowed here. Today, vines are growing again on the “Closterweinberg” and the wine can be tasted during special tours.

Royal Evening 2.0 – Ludwigsburg Castle

It doesn’t matter whether it’s furnishings, room and garden design or architecture – they loved it French, back then in the castles. The model for many baroque palaces was the palace of the French king in Versailles, whose court was imitated in many places down to the last detail. In Württemberg, Duke Eberhard Ludwig had a residence built in front of the gates of Stuttgart in 1704, modeled on Versailles. Ludwigsburg Palace, named after the duke, is one of the largest and best-preserved baroque palace complexes. Today it invites you again to the “Soirée Royale”, the former meeting point of high society. Gambling, entertainment and exquisite food “à la baroque” await the guests. The appropriate wardrobe will be provided. Only suitable, elegant shoes are requested.

Brewing art of the monks – Alpirsbach Monastery

“Cervisiam bibat! – Drink beer!” What the famous Benedictine sister Hildegard von Bingen advised in the Middle Ages cannot be wrong today. Monastery culture and beer brewing tradition have always been closely linked. Also in the Alpirsbach monastery in the northern Black Forest. If you want to know how the barley juice was brewed in olden times, you should join the tour “Beer brewing in the Middle Ages – About the brewing art of the monks”. It gives an insight into the historical brewing trade. Of course, you can also taste it at the end: In the “Cellarium”, the monastery’s storage cellar, delicious bread with lard and naturally cloudy Alpirsbacher beer are served to strengthen you. Fortunately, the order of St. Benedict to exercise moderation in eating and drinking is history here today.

Coffee gossip at court – Aulendorf Castle

When Countess Paula zu Königsegg-Aulendorf invites you to coffee and pastries in the Marble Hall of Aulendorf Castle, spicy stories from the high nobility are on the record. Although the Countess, as Empress Sissi’s top lady-in-waiting, is bound to discretion, her maid Rosalie doesn’t take etiquette so seriously and chats happily on the tour through the halls and rooms of the palace. During the coffee gossip at the festively set table, however, the hostess insists on reporting on her time in Vienna herself. Confectioner Luise Roth delivers the tarts to go with the mocha fresh to the court, where they can be spooned up in proper style with silver cutlery from the fine porcelain to accompany the aristocratic anecdotes.

Picnic between lemon and orange trees – Castle Garden Weikersheim

A garden as an extension of the castle and outdoor ballrooms: Count Carl Ludwig von Hohenlohe-Weikersheim set himself an ambitious goal when he took office in 1708. The result is a baroque dream with great entertainment value. Perfect symmetry paired with opulent diversity spoils the eye as far as it can see. You can test your knowledge of antiquity with the many original sandstone sculptures from the 18th century. And the “Zwergengalerie” provokes the funny bone with its 16 curious figures. The “Castle and Picnic” group offer is a feast for the eyes and the palate. An exciting tour of the castle grounds is followed by culinary delights in the orchard or – in bad weather – in the castle itself.
