Borussia Dortmund crashes out of the Europa League against Glasgow Rangers. A devastating media echo follows. The press comments on BVB’s performance.
With the crashing out of the Europa League playoffs, Borussia Dortmund has once again confirmed many of the prejudices that have accompanied the team since the start of the season. A lack of resilience and individual mistakes, among other things, ensured that BVB said goodbye to the international stage early after the 2-2 win at Glasgow Rangers. The media response is correspondingly clear. We have collected press comments from Germany and abroad.
The Glasgow Evening Times (Schottland): “Rangers complete Borussia Dortmund’s huge kill in an exciting Europa League night at the Ibrox”
The international press comments on BVB’s departure:
“For those lucky enough to be at the Ibrox last night the noise must have been unbelievable as Rangers crashed Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League. That was a result for eternity. For a generation of fans, this was the best thing they’ve ever seen, a night to remember no matter what else Rangers achieve. Rarely has a draw meant so much at the Ibrox.”
The Guardian (England): “James Tavernier’s brace knocks Dortmund out of the Europa League”
“Before this duel with Rangers, Borussia Dortmund was the favorite to win the Europa League. In the end, the German team was eliminated. In a rough atmosphere in Glasgow, Dortmund performed much better than in front of their own audience, but couldn’t turn the tide.”
The Sun (England): “A historic win for Rangers”
“Tavernier’s brace helps Rangers to an incredible Europa League win. The Rangers secured themselves with a sensational victory (if you add up the first and second leg, editor’s note) against Borussia Dortmund to reach the round of 16. Jude Bellingham admits Borussia Dortmund ‘let the fans down’ with their shock Europa League elimination to Rangers.”
BBC (England): “Rangers completed a major moment in their history after knocking the German giants out of the Europa League in an epic draw.”
Marca (Spain): “Without Haaland there are no miracles”
“Gio van Bronckhorst’s team claimed the result of the first leg. A valuable win against a rival who goes down without Haaland. Dortmund isn’t the same without the Norwegian.”
AS (Spain): “The Germans, again without Haaland, stumble again against Taverniers Rangers and are eliminated from the European Cup.”
“Amidst the chaos, however, Jude Bellingham once again stood out. The midfielder played well above the team’s level in the Champions League and Europa League and impressed the football scene.”
Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy): “Rangers, what a performance – Dortmund eliminated”
“Rangers eliminate Dortmund. Devilish rhythms in Glasgow as Rangers avoid Borussia Dortmund comeback A goal from Kent, disallowed for an alleged foul, would have been the culmination of a night to remember.”
Tuttosport (Italy): “Dortmund fails to comeback with Rangers.”
“A cold shower for Rose’s boys, who try to believe in it until the end, but the result is not even.”
Blick (Switzerland): “Rangers continue, BVB in the deep”
“Tavernier shoots Dortmund into the crisis. The mortgage from the first leg is too big for BVB. In the second leg there is a disappointing 2-2.”
Image: “BVB missed the euro miracle”
The German press comments on BVB-Aus in Glasgow:
“That was not enough! Borussia Dortmund missed the Euro miracle at Glasgow Rangers. After the 4-2 disaster in the first leg, a 2-2 draw in Glasgow is not enough to progress. The club had such big goals. Instead of winning the Europa League, Borussia make a fool of themselves against the Scots and are eliminated in the play-offs for the round of 16!”
Kicker: “2: 4 mortgage from the first leg too high”
“Borussia Dortmund fails again: In Glasgow, coach Marco Rose’s team robs them of the fruits of their labor and lacks the highest quality. It is becoming increasingly clear how much the squad really needs to be renovated.”
SZ: “BVB is already flying out again”
“Somewhere between heaven and hell, Dortmund play the whole season. Sometimes jubilant, sometimes saddened to death. “Do or die”, eat or die, was the motto of the attacker Marco Reus before the second leg and one had felt: Dortmund’s captain once again did not know what face his team would show.
FAZ: “Futile Dortmund catch-up”
“More passion, no reward – the football fairytale that Borussia Dortmund had hoped for never materialized. The 2-2 win at Glasgow Rangers sealed the knockout of the Bundesliga runners-up in the second round of the Europa League.”
