Moers / Lower Rhine. It is with great dismay that the Niederrhein Press Club announces the death of its long-time board member, Ulf Maaßen. The 63-year-old fell asleep gently in his house in Moers on December 16.

Ulf Maaßen was a well-known and valued journalist well beyond the borders of the Lower Rhine, who began his editorial career as a student by criticizing the reporting in the local newspapers during the summer months. He did so so forcefully that he was asked to do better. And so he wrote reports for the NRZ / WAZ Moers and cultural reports and cinema tips for the Rheinische Post (RP) Moers. In addition to music, film was also his great passion.

At the Westdeutsche Zeitung (WZ) in Krefeld he started as a freelancer, then moved to WAZ Duisburg-Nord as a permanent client. Further stations were the weekly magazines of the WAZ group in Dorsten and Dinslaken. Parallel to his studies in journalism and communication science at the Ruhr University Bochum, he worked for “Moers Music” and was in charge of public relations at the Moers Festival. He was also active for the WDR and for the Westdeutsche Zeitung in the Viersen district.

After the long-awaited traineeship at WZ, he took on various tasks (reportage, producer, trainer), including in Mönchengladbach, Mettmann and Krefeld.

He coped with the (not voluntary) professional reorientation with flying colors and became a co-founder of the “Wort Plus” network. He was also involved in the online editing of “Local Views”. Ulf Maaßen has been a member of the Niederrhein Press Club in the German Association of Journalists since 1980, which this year recognized him for his 40-year membership.

“With Ulf Maaßen we are not only losing a dear and committed colleague, but also a good friend. He had excellent ideas and was very successful as the event manager of our press club with his own event formats such as the crime thriller dinner and family outings. We are all saddened and deeply saddened by his death. Our sincere condolences go to his family, ”said Sigrid Baum, Chairwoman of the Niederrhein Press Club on behalf of all board members.
