The Metropolis and the City of Lyon have big plans for the Presqu’île by 2030. What changes for a less congested, more pedestrian, more pleasant and ready to fight against climate change? Several scenarios are being studied to transform the heart of the Metropolis: give your opinion until October 30!
Over the past 10 years, our way of getting around in the city center has evolved a lot. Just like our uses and our expectations in terms of quality of life in the city. Unfortunately, the public space has not yet been adapted:
- today, only 15% of trips to the Lyon peninsula are made by car, in favor of trips by public transport, bicycle or on foot. However, the car still occupies a very important place, the sidewalks are narrow, the cycle paths are poorly protected from traffic, the pedestrian streets are few…
- in summer, with the proliferation of very hot, even scorching days, the lack of trees and plants creates heat islands that make daily life very stressful.
What objectives for the Peninsula?
The question that arises is how to rebalance the different modes of travel and improve the living environment on the slopes of the Croix Rousse up to Perrache? To respond to this, the Métropole de Lyon and the city of Lyon will launch an ambitious urban project to:
- faire more room for pedestrians and cyclists and reduce the various types of pollution linked to cars;
- create spaces for all generationslocal shops…
- fight against global warming and heat islands, promote biodiversity by increasing the number of trees
- highlight the heritagedevelop more welcoming streets and squares;
- boosting trade and supporting merchants with, for example, exemptions for deliveries in pedestrian areas
- make traffic on the Presqu’île more pleasant;
To act quickly, but without rushing, the Métropole and the City of Lyon have decided to work in stages:
Stage 1: rapid and light changes from 2023
As of next year, the Métropole and the City of Lyon plan to make more space for pedestrians in 10 areas already identified. Among them, rue Émile Zola, the rue de la Martinière – Place Rambaud sector, the rue Garet – Bât d’Argent sector… with for example:
- removal of parking spaces;
- the creation of pedestrian areas;
- The development of terraces for restaurants…

Stage 2: fewer cars on the Presqu’île from 2024
In 2024, the project provides for the creation of a limited traffic zone between Bellecour and Cordeliers. The idea: a set of streets reserved for pedestrians, cycles, buses, local residents, professionals, delivery people… The objective: fewer cars, without abandoning the people who live or work in this area. Subsequently, the project also envisages the creation of pedestrian streets, and a new traffic plan for cars.
Step 3: rethink bus circulation from 2025
The goal: unclog key sectors such as rue de la République or place des Terreaux, and leave more space for pedestrians and cyclists. The idea is to shift the stops of these buses to other sectors, such as along the Saône.
Take part in the consultation
The Métropole and the City of Lyon have therefore drawn up the main lines of the project, and its different stages. But the details of all these changes have yet to be decided. To do this, the Métropole has just launched a major citizen consultation. The consultation “Let’s imagine the peninsula of tomorrow” has just opened, and will be open until October 30th. Meet on the platform jeparticipe.grandlyon.com to learn more about the project and give your opinion on the future of the Presqu’île.
Several scenarios submitted for consultation
You can give your opinion on each stage of the project:
- For the 10 zones to be modified from 2023: what are your expectations? What amenities do you want? What are the alternatives to parking on the road?
- For the limited traffic zone between Bellecour and Cordeliers: what rules to make it efficient and fair? What exceptions?
- For the reorganization of bus traffic: where to pass the buses in the Presqu’île?
