Presidential elections in Tunisia: polls closed, turnout at 27.7%

(ANSA) – TUNIS, 06 OCTOBER – The polls have closed in Tunisia for the presidential elections, with a turnout calculated at 27.7%. This was stated at a press conference by the president of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) Farouk Bousaker, specifying that the percentage relating to the vote in Tunisia was 28.5%, that from abroad was 16.3%. In the first round of the presidential elections in 2019 the turnout was 48.9%. The challenge is between the outgoing president Kais Saied, 66 years old – who declared that his re-nomination is part of “a war of liberation and self-determination” aimed to “establish a new Republic” – and Zouhair Maghzaoui, 59 years old, former member of the pan-Arab left, leader of the Echaab party, and Ayachi Zammel, 47 years old, agri-food industrialist and leader of the small liberal Azimoun party, in prison since September 2 last year and already sentenced to several years for collecting false signatures in his candidacy dossier. To find out the final results we will have to wait until tomorrow evening at 7.30pm, ISIE announced. (HANDLE).
