Interior Minister Lambert Noel Matha denied the date of the elections announced by Jeune Afrique last Tuesday.
« The date that was published by Jeune Afrique concerns Jeune Afrique “said the Minister. indeed, last Tuesday the information site Jeune Afrique announced that the calendar of elections in Gabon will take place on September 2, 2023. Information that the Minister of the Interior does not recognize. because the latter announced that the exact date of the holding of these elections which will take place in a single round is not known.
The minister explains that this process is summarized in article 74 of the electoral code which stipulates that ” the Gabonese Elections Center sets the date for the convocation of voters. This date is materialized by decree issued on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior. The publication in the official journal or in a newspaper of legal announcements of the decree of convocation must be carried out at the latest thirty days before the ballot. ».
Gabon is preparing general elections before the end of 2023 (Presidential, legislative and local). Several political leaders have already announced their intention to seek the presidential seat. The outgoing president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, in power for 14 years (2 terms of 7 years), has not yet announced his candidacy.
