Direct speech: “This week, the Parliament will be asked to make a personnel decision. I want to point this out now. I decided to replace the Minister of Defense of Ukraine.
Aleksey Reznikov went through these more than 550 days of a full-scale war. I believe that the ministry needs new approaches and other formats of interaction both with the military and with society as a whole.
Now Rustem Umerov should head the ministry. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine knows this man well, and Mr. Umerov needs no further introduction. I expect parliament to support this candidacy. Autumn is a time for strengthening.”
What came before: On August 31, the UE wrote that Reznikov would be dismissed in the near future, the head of the State Property Fund Rustem Umerov could take the post of head of the Ministry of Defense.
Background:
On August 10, Ukrayinska Pravda, citing interlocutors in power, reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky was looking for a replacement for Oleksiy Reznikov as defense minister. At least two candidates are being considered. On August 19, Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, commenting on rumors that the president was looking for a replacement for him at the post of the defense department, said that this position was “temporary history” for him, and he himself could quit. Zelensky, in response to a question about the likelihood of the dismissal of Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, said on August 23 that he would be able to comment on personnel decisions when he signed the relevant decrees. On August 28, Reznikov said that he had discussed with the president the possibility of moving to another position, but the decision should be made by Vladimir Zelensky himself.
